Canterbury Rams Announce The Signing of Ben Constable

The Canterbury Rams are excited to announce the signing of Ben Constable for the 2021 Sal’s NBL Season!

Ben grew up a Cantabrian and was well known in the local basketball scene. He attended Cashmere High School, played Canterbury Representative Basketball from U12s to U18s and was involved with various basketball clubs including the Checkers, Wolverines and Pioneer. He also captained the U18 NZ Koru Tour team in 2006 before playing for the U18 NZ National Team the following year.

Ben decided to pursue the US college pathway coming out of high school. In addition to being a hardworking, talented player on the court his effort and success in the classroom and leadership roles at school was instrumental in setting him up for a rewarding college experience. Ben completed his Bachelor of Physics with first class honours at Gettysburg College while playing for the college’s NCAA basketball team. He was on the Academic Honor Role three years straight (2010-13) and received an Academic All-American Nomination in his final year (2013).

Upon finishing at Gettysburg, Ben’s career took him to South Africa where he played for the Kwa-Zulu Martins in the South African Basketball National League. He received various accolades including MVP in 2015 and 2016. Yet basketball was not his only focus. Ben started and managed a social enterprise business called FreshBox, a grocery subscription service. At the time as managing director he had over 200 customers, which resulted in being able to fund daily feeding plans for 400 children in need. Ben continues to be involved in the FreshBox enterprise as an advisory director.

His next stop was the United Kingdom in 2019. Ben was involved both in playing for and coaching the Oxford University Blues Basketball Team and embarked on his MBA at Oxford as a Jacobs Fellow. Ben is continuing to study towards his MBA while being back home in New Zealand.

Ben’s international experience and leadership is something we are looking forward to having as a part of our Rams squad this season. Rams General Manager Caleb Harrison commented, “Ben brings a diverse range of experiences to the Canterbury Rams.  He is great example of the life experiences & opportunities that can be created through basketball.  Cantabrians are going to enjoy seeing Ben playing for his home province.”
