CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – We’re excited to announce the signing of American forward CJ Penha Jr as our third and final import for the 2025 Sal’s NBL season.
“When we first started watching CJ’s film, his motor immediately stood out,” noted Head Coach Quinn Clinton. “His ability to run the floor and maintain high energy on both ends of the court was impressive.”
“We were especially excited by his skill in stretching the floor and attacking closeouts — those qualities fit perfectly with the dynamic of our team make up. We’re really looking forward to bringing CJ on board and supporting him as he continues his basketball journey.”
Penha Jr began his collegiate career at the NAIA level, transferring to Division II’s Trevecca Nazarene for his senior season. His per game averages of 20.3 points and 10.1 rebounds earned him Great Midwest All-Conference honours in 2022. With his fifth year of eligibility, Penha Jr transferred to the Division I level to play for Boston College.
The 6’7” forward most recently played for the Norrköping Dolphins, who finished top of the Swedish Basketligan standings and won the 2024 championship. With the Dolphins, Penha Jr averaged 11.0 points, 4.6 rebounds on 50.9%/39.1% shooting splits. He will be arriving in New Zealand in early April to join the team.

“What really drew me to Canterbury was the coaching staff’s belief in me not just as a player, but as a person,” shared Penha Jr. “Knowing they trust my abilities and see me as a key part of their vision really drew me to the organisation.”
“Beyond that, the team’s culture, the system, and commitment to success stood out to me. I wanted to be part of an environment that pushes me to grow and contribute to something bigger than myself. I’m excited for the journey ahead and ready to give my all for Canterbury.”
“Rams fans can expect me to bring energy, intensity, and a winning mentality every time I step on the court. I’m here to play hard, compete at the highest level, and make an impact on both ends of the floor. Whether it’s making big plays, bringing excitement, or uplifting my teammates, I’ll give everything I have to help this team succeed. I can’t wait to put on a show for the fans and be part of something special this season!”
