American shooting guard MJ Walker is set to call Christchurch home for the 2024 Sal’s NBL season after inking a deal with the Canterbury Rams.
Walker made a name for himself at the collegiate level, captaining a series of successful Florida State teams while playing alongside NBA players such as Scottie Barnes, Devin Vassell, Terance Mann, and Patrick Williams. Walker reached great heights with the Florida State Seminoles, achieving All-ACC second team honours in 2021 and finishing ninth all-time in programme history for three point makes.
“We’ve got a great roster and MJ is a piece that’s really going to complement our players with the gravity of his shooting,” said Head Coach Judd Flavell. “He’s got a strong build that allows him to play and defend in this league, which is important because our league is so physical.”
After going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, Walker joined the New York Knicks for their training camp and played two seasons for their G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks. In his second season in Westchester he averaged 15.0 points while knocking down 2.3 three pointers per game. During the 2022 NBA season he signed a 10-day contract with the Phoenix Suns, making two regular season appearances for the team. Walker is currently playing for the Greensboro Swarm of the G League, where he is shooting three pointers at a 40% clip.
“Walker is a big-time shot maker whose confidence and versatility as a jump shooter widens the court tenfold,“ said Director of Scouting Tim Smith. “He’s a seamless fit with our current core and has a skillset that should bring the best out of the guys around him.”
