Organisational Update – Mick Downer

The Canterbury Rams announce that Mick Downer will be not be returning as Head Coach next season.

Downer took the helm of the Rams in 2019 and had success in his first season leading the team to a semi-finals appearance and was named 2019 NBL Coach of the Year.  The past couple of seasons have been challenging for the Rams, first with impacts of Covid and then missing the playoffs in 2021.  “We are very grateful Mick has brought a very professional approach to everything he has done including building a team culture with high standards and supporting development of coaches throughout the region”, stated Rams General Manager Caleb Harrison.

“It was a hard decision for us but with limited resources it is important the organisation is clear on its direction & priorities.  The organisation is focused on winning being a by-product of developing players who have potential to play at the US, ANBL & International levels.  We are focused on our talent identification processes and backing the talent we believe has what it takes to be longer term year round professionals also playing in leagues outside NZ.  This includes a heavy focus on the top junior High School talent throughout the region.  We want to acknowledge Mick’s significant contribution to the Club and the wider Canterbury basketball community and we wish him all the best with his future endeavours,” stated Caleb Harrison.

Looking forward to the future, the Rams management will be targeting & beginning discussions with suitable candidates.  The Sal’s NBL tip’s off in early April, 2022.
