Rams Re-Sign Ihaka Cate

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – Christ’s College star Ihaka Cate is set to return for a second season with the Canterbury Rams in 2025.

“Ihaka possesses strong defensive versatility, a rare attribute among high school athletes,” explained Head Coach Quinn Clinton. “He consistently does the little things that contribute to winning. We are excited for him to continue refining his skills this season as he competes daily against older competition.”

“Ihaka has already demonstrated strong leadership throughout the preseason, and we look forward to him continuing to grow in confidence as the season progresses.”

Cate appeared in 3 Rapid League games for the Rams in 2024 at the age of 16. He was also named to the Secondary Schools Nationals All Star Five after scoring 24 points in the Grand Final for the national champions.

“Extremely blessed to be returning with the Rams for 2025,” shared Cate. “I’m excited to develop further from my experience with the Rams last year and looking forward to being part of such an amazing club once again.”

In June-July of last year, Cate suited up for the Junior Tall Blacks at the FIBA U17 World Cup in Turkey, scoring 11 points against the hosts in their first game of the tournament.
