CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — It is with great excitement that the Canterbury Rams announce the return of development player Ihaka Cate for the 2026 Sal’s NBL season.
Preparing for his third season in the league, the 18-year-old Christ’s College graduate played in 11 games for the Rams in 2025.
“Ihaka has grown in confidence over the past year,” said Head Coach Quinn Clinton. “His ability to defend and consistently execute his role at a high level makes him an easy fit within our system and a valuable contributor.”
Cate’s growth this past season was substantial, progressing from 3 Rapid League appearances the season prior to suiting up for 15 Rapid League games in 2025. With averages of 6.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and a team-best 1.0 steals per game, Cate proved to be an important cog in the Rams’ Rapid League unit.
“Being a part of the Rams has truly pushed me to thrive in a space where I am constantly being challenged,” said Cate. “Over the past few years, I’ve received endless support from our coaching staff, Rams crew, and even our loyal fans to become better every day.”

Cate had an impressive showing at the 2025 NZ U20 Nationals to conclude his High School career, earning All-Tournament Team honours, winning Defensive Player of the Tournament, and being crowned a Champion with Canterbury.
“This is Ihaka’s third season with the club, and he impacts winning through all the little things,” added Clinton. “He has improved across all areas in the offseason and has been a key part of preseason, shooting the ball with confidence, showing leadership, and lifting those around him.”
“I’m going into the 2026 season with the intent of becoming a better player individually and for the sake of our team’s success. We go into the season with the same goal of ending it victoriously, and I will do my best to contribute however that may be,” said Cate.
