Smith Confirms Red and Black Commitment

Sam Smith has confirmed his plans for 30 April, to take the court with the Canterbury Rams in their season opener.

Smith’s signing today completes a red and black-strong squad that the Cowles Stadium crowd know and love.

With the return of Taylor Britt, Joe Cook-Green, Sam Smith and Max Darling, and the addition of Jackson Stent and Mike Karena, we have a very strong Kiwi core. We are looking forward to this group doing the heavy lifting and driving the culture along with the support of our import Sunday Dech with a 2nd import still to be announced,” says Canterbury Rams General Manager Caleb Harrison.

Smith’s journey started locally with the Mainland Eagles during his time at Lincoln University, first playing for the Rams & representing Canterbury at the U19 level in 2014. He then joined current Canterbury teammate Joe Cook-Green at Texas Wesleyan University, before returning to New Zealand to play for the Rams in 2019 and then playing a season with Lugano Tigers in Switzerland.  Sam as been an instrumental member of the Rams for the past 3 seasons.

“Sam brings versatility, experience & plays with a high level of IQ which will be vital for the culture of the group,” says incumbent Canterbury Rams Head Coach Judd Flavell.

Smith has since established a career in the finance sector, showing his versatility and drive on and off the court, and his ability to leverage the world of opportunities he has enjoyed through basketball.
