Tawhiri Cate Back For Sophomore Season

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — Christ’s College star Tawhiri Cate re-joins the Canterbury Rams for his second season as a development player.

The 17-year-old point guard made his Sal’s NBL debut this past season, playing 7 total games and scoring his first professional points versus the Nelson Giants.

“We’re excited to welcome Tawhiri back into the squad this year,” said Head Coach Quinn Clinton. “It’s a great chance for him to keep developing every day and gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to get to the next level.”

Cate was named to the All-Star Five at the FIBA U16 Asia Cup as he led New Zealand to a third place finish. He sported averages of 13.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.8 assists, good for second-most in the tournament.

“Another year that comes with an honour,” said Cate. “Being on the Rams again is a huge opportunity for me to grow and develop as a person and player. I’m looking forward to doing it again and hoping to finish the job this time.”

While he saw limited action in the Sal’s NBL, the Sky Broadband Rapid League provided Cate with an environment to showcase his game, scoring 3.9 points per game as one of the youngest members of the team.

“He showed some promising glimpses in Rapid League last season, and we’re excited to see him build on that form throughout preseason and into the upcoming year,” said Clinton.

“Thanks to the systems and the coaches, especially Quinn, they have got me to where I am at the moment,” added Cate. “I’m looking forward to working with them and the club again.”
