Rams Announce The Signing of Mason Whittaker

The Canterbury Rams are excited to announce the signing of Mason Whittaker for the 2021 Sal’s NBL Season.

Mason joins the Rams this season as our third North Canterbury local, with Jack Exeter and Ben Hall also recently getting announced. Mason grew up in a small town in the North Canterbury region called Cust, before moving to Christchurch in his later high school years.

He played at Christ’s College under Head Coach Ben Sheat and prior to that at Rangiora High School. Through his high school basketball and years of involvement with the North Canterbury and Waitaha Representative Programs, Mason has become a prolific young stretch forward.

He is also a part of the Mainland Eagles Academy, which supports development pathways for junior players & coaches throughout the South Island to open opportunities for National teams, US College scholarships & career pathways. With this extra basketball training and educational support from the Eagles, Mason is planning to head over to the USA on a college scholarship later this year.

Mason already has Rams experience under his belt, being a part of last year’s Sal’s NBL Showdown team and the Rams Schick 3X3 cup team. Rams Head Coach Mick Downer is excited to have him back on board again saying “Mason is one of the countries most exciting young talents and we are wrapped to have him wear the red and black for the Rams again. After some exciting (but small) opportunities in last year’s showdown Mason has continued to improve through sheer hard work and dedication through the off-season. Gaining strength, and overcoming some niggling injuries, he has thrived on the court during the preseason. Relentless, skilful, and really coachable, Mason is an awesome person to have as part of our program.”
